12 easy · 44 medium · 27 hard Percentile levels 60th to 99thWhat the percentile levels mean
Each question carries a percentile level: our estimate of the test-taker percentile at which most candidates answer that question correctly under exam timing. It is a calibration from experience, not data published by GMAC, and it is there to show you where your ceiling is. A question at the 90th percentile is one that most candidates below that level get wrong.
How the timed practice works
- Pick a sectionQuantitative Reasoning runs 21 questions in 45 minutes; Data Insights 20 in 45, as on the real exam.
- Work at exam paceOne question at a time, with the clock running. Choose A to E with the mouse or the keyboard.
- Review by levelEvery question comes back with your answer, the correct one, a worked solution and its percentile level, so you can see where your ceiling is.
How to use them
On the GMAT the clock is part of the question. Two minutes is enough for almost every item if you have a plan within the first thirty seconds; if you do not, guess, bookmark it and move on. The Focus Edition lets you review and change up to three answers per section, so a bookmark is not a loss.
For data sufficiency, never solve more than you need. The question is whether the answer can be determined, not what it is, and most of the time lost on DS goes into computing values nobody asked for.
Common questions
What is on the GMAT Focus Edition?
Three sections of 45 minutes each: Quantitative Reasoning (21 questions), Verbal Reasoning (23 questions) and Data Insights (20 questions). Total scores run from 205 to 805. You choose the section order and can review and change up to three answers in each section.
Is geometry tested on the GMAT Focus Edition?
No. Geometry was removed. Quantitative Reasoning covers arithmetic, algebra, word problems and number properties. Data Insights uses charts and tables, and allows an on-screen calculator.
What do the percentile levels mean?
They are our estimate of the test-taker percentile at which most candidates get a question right under exam timing. They are a calibration, not GMAC data, and are meant to show which questions separate the top of the range from the middle.
Are these official GMAT questions?
No. Official questions belong to GMAC and are published in the Official Guide and the mba.com practice exams, which you should also use. These are original questions written to the same format and level, each with a full worked solution.
