What is different about applying from Qatar

Doha's British-curriculum and IB schools send a steady number of strong mathematicians to UK universities, but the cohort sitting a MAT or STEP in any given year is small. A candidate is often the only person in their school taking the paper, which removes the thing that helps most: other people to be stuck alongside.

Education City complicates the decision in a way that is worth taking seriously rather than dismissing. Several strong universities operate campuses here, and for some candidates staying is the better answer. I would rather say that on a first call than build a UK application for someone who should not be making one.

For professionals, the MBA question is usually sponsorship and return — whether the employer supports it, and what the plan is afterwards. Admissions committees ask that question directly and are unforgiving of vague answers, and it is the part of the application most worth getting right before anything is written.

Time zone and format

Doha is one hour ahead of me in summer and two in winter. Afternoon and evening sessions in Qatar sit well inside my working day, and everything is online.

Oxford and Cambridge in STEM

For students at British and IB schools in Doha aiming at Oxford or Cambridge for mathematics, computer science, engineering or physics, I teach the MAT, STEP and TMUA myself and run interview training through to December. See Oxbridge & US STEM admissions and STEP preparation.

MBA applications

For professionals applying to LBS, INSEAD or the M7: positioning, essays, CV and interview preparation, from someone who interviews MBA and Executive MBA applicants for London Business School. See MBA admissions.

Quant careers

For candidates targeting trading and research roles, see quant interview preparation and quant interview questions with worked solutions.
