What the percentile levels mean

Each question carries a percentile level: our estimate of the test-taker percentile at which most candidates answer that question correctly under exam timing. It is a calibration from experience, not ETS data, and it is there to show you where your ceiling is.

How the timed practice works

  1. Pick a lengthA 15-question section in 26 minutes, the 12-question data set, or the full 27-question measure in 47 minutes.
  2. Work at exam paceOne question at a time with the clock running. Numeric entry accepts fractions and decimals.
  3. Review by levelEvery question comes back with your answer, the correct one, a worked solution and its percentile level.

How to use them

Quantitative comparison is where GRE time is won and lost. Before computing anything, ask whether you can compare the quantities without evaluating them: square both sides, subtract a common term, or try the extreme cases. If two different allowed values give two different answers, the answer is D and you are done.

For data interpretation, read the axis units and the title before the question. Most wrong answers come from reading a percentage as a number, or thousands as units.

Common questions

What is on the GRE General Test?

Since September 2023 the GRE takes under two hours: one Analytical Writing essay, two Verbal Reasoning sections and two Quantitative Reasoning sections. Quantitative Reasoning has 27 questions in 47 minutes: 12 questions in 21 minutes, then 15 in 26 minutes.

What question types are in GRE Quant?

Quantitative comparison, multiple choice with one answer, multiple choice with one or more answers, and numeric entry, some of them in data interpretation sets built on graphs and tables. An on-screen calculator is provided.

What do the percentile levels mean?

They are our estimate of the test-taker percentile at which most candidates get a question right under exam timing. They are a calibration, not ETS data, and show which questions separate a top Quant score from a good one.

Are these official GRE questions?

No. Official questions belong to ETS and are published in its official guides and POWERPREP practice tests, which you should also use. These are original questions written to the same format and level, each with a full worked solution.

Need a high Quant score for a quant or MFE programme?

Programmes in financial engineering and quantitative finance read the GRE Quant score closely. I teach GRE preparation inside MFE and MBA admissions programmes, with the maths taught properly rather than as tricks.
